Shirts Share Hopeful Messages in September at The Newark Public Library

In a world where mental health struggles affect millions, it's crucial that we come together to support and uplift one another. September is Suicide Prevention Month, a time when we unite to raise awareness and offer hope to those who need it most. On Wednesday, September 13th, Newark Public Library staff wore T-Shirts with messages of hope to raise awareness for Suicide Prevention Month.

The weeks leading up to September 13th, Newark Library Staff were encouraged to participate in team-building workshops at Made@NPL to create their own Hope Shirts. Wearing t-shirts with hopeful messages during Suicide Prevention Month is a powerful way to promote awareness. The idea originated with Newark Library Social Worker, Evelyn Fabian. With the help of Samantha Katehis, Made@NPL Manager and her makerspace team: Inisa Jefferson and Davion Cottrell-Miller, a total of 150 shirts were made using materials and equipment available at Made@NPL. Patrons were invited to make their own Hope Shirts during a drop-in session at Made@NPL.

During the workshops, staff and patrons alike shared their experiences and stories surrounding suicide and mental health. When you wear a t-shirt with a hopeful message, you become a walking advocate for mental health awareness. It invites people to approach you and start conversations about mental health, creating a safe space for sharing experiences, fears, and hopes. This simple act can be a lifeline for someone who is struggling, helping them feel seen and understood.
